Johnston-Willis Hospital is first in Central Virginia with the latest da Vinci® Si System for Minimally Invasive Robotic ProceduresAdvancements Improve Robot Resolution as Surgeons Cut Recovery Time and Incision SizeMedia Contact: Richmond, VA, October 13, 2009 - Johnston-Willis Hospital announced today that they are the first in Central Virginia to perform minimally invasive surgery using Intuitive Surgicals da Vinci® Si System. Marijan Gospodnetic, MD, of Richmond OB-GYN and a Johnston-Willis team of nurses, anesthesiologists and technicians were the first to perform a hysterectomy using the new da Vinci Si. The robotic device can also be used for other gynecological and urological procedures. "We are very pleased to have the opportunity to be the first team in the region to operate with the da Vinci Si model," said Dr. Gospodnetic. Now patients have an option that will allow them to recover from surgery in days rather than weeks. Using the da Vinci Surgical System, the surgeon operates while seated comfortably at a console viewing a 3D image of the surgical field. The surgeon's fingers grasp the master controls below the display, with hands and wrists naturally positioned relative to his or her eyes. The system seamlessly translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient. "The da Vinci Si System provides surgeons greater than twice the viewing resolution and 20% more viewing area, said Urologist Michael E. Franks, MD. This means improved clarity and detail -- critical when performing delicate dissection or in reconstructive procedures." "In my experience, robotic surgery results in a better operation for the patient with reduced complications, scarring, hospital stays and recovery time," said Nathan Guerette, MD, FACOG, of the Female Pelvic Medicine Institute of Virginia. Dr. Guerette has significant experience with robotics and recently joined the Johnston-Willis Hospital medical staff. He is central Virginias only formally fellowship trained urogynecologist. Since almost 50% of women postchildbirth have some level of pelvic support or incontinence issue, the da Vinci helps bring treatment to women that might not otherwise have the time to get this distressing and treatable problem fixed. This latest da Vinci Si system introduces several new features designed to provide additional clinical benefits and operational efficiencies: enhanced 3D HD resolution offers superior visual clarity of target tissue and anatomy, potentially allowing for greater surgical precision; an updated and simplified user interface enhances operating room efficiency; newly upgradeable architecture and compatibility with existing OR suite technology facilitates the seamless integration of the da Vinci Si System into the OR of the 21st century; and finally, the addition of new ergonomic settings allows greater surgeon comfort during procedures.
